A 19-year-old college baseball player, Angel Mercado-Ocasio, has tragically died following a dugout collapse in Pennsylvania. According to reports, the Central Penn College infielder was helping a youth baseball league at a park in Harrisburg on Monday afternoon when part of an illegally built makeshift dugout fell suddenly, landing on the teenager.
Mercado-Ocasio sustained significant injuries and was rushed to the hospital. However, he sadly passed away at 11:12 PM on Tuesday. The City of Harrisburg spokesperson Matt Maisel stated that Mercado-Ocasio was working to take down the dugout when the tragedy occurred.
Central Penn College President Linda Fedrizzi-Williams issued a statement expressing her condolences and shock at the loss of one of their own. She said that the Central Penn College family is mourning the heart-wrenching loss of a promising young athlete who senselessly lost his life while helping others enjoy the sport he loved. Fedrizzi-Williams added that the baseball team was able to say their goodbyes to Mercado-Ocasio on Tuesday, and no words can adequately express their anguish.
Mercado-Ocasio was a freshman and had played in 17 games for Central Penn College this season, recording two hits, two RBIs, and seven stolen bases. He last suited up for the team just days ago on May 6. His death has been a shock to the college community, and he will be missed by many.
This tragedy highlights the importance of ensuring that sports facilities are well-maintained and safe for use. Illegal structures and poor maintenance can have devastating consequences and put lives at risk. It is a reminder that safety should always be a top priority in all aspects of life, and we must take all necessary precautions to prevent accidents and tragedies like this from occurring. The loss of Angel Mercado-Ocasio is a sad reminder that life is fragile, and we must cherish every moment.
