In a sneak peek, viewers were able to confirm the sexuality of Ryan Evans, portrayed by Lucas Grabeel. Ortega explains, “They would see it, they would feel it, they would know it, and they would identify with it. Lucas Grabeel himself had a pivotal role in the development of Evans’ character. In an interview with TMZ, Grabeel revealed that he approached Ortega to discuss his character’s sexuality. He asked, “Hey, so can we talk about the character for a second? Ryan’s gay, right?” Grabeel recalls that Ortega wholeheartedly agreed, solidifying his interpretation of the character.

Recognizing the abundance of talented gay actors, Grabeel admits that if “High School Musical” were made today, he might not have played the character of Ryan. He acknowledges that as a straight white man, he doesn’t want to inadvertently deprive other deserving individuals of opportunities in the industry.
