Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has expressed his disapproval of Florida’s LGBTQ+ legislation ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. Hamilton, a long-time advocate of equality, called the state’s laws “not good at all” and vowed to wear a rainbow on his helmet in solidarity with those affected by the measures. The “Don’t Say Gay” bill, as it is known, and other recent actions taken by Governor Ron DeSantis have generated controversy, prompting Hamilton to speak out.
In an interview with reporters on Thursday, Hamilton criticized the legislation and expressed his support for the LGBTQ+ community. He stated that he hopes they continue to stand firm and push back against the discriminatory laws. He went on to say that anyone who sees him competing this weekend will know where he stands on the topic. Hamilton even compared the situation to human rights issues in Saudi Arabia, where he also wore a rainbow on his helmet.
While Hamilton did not call for F1 to avoid events in Florida, he stated that he has been keeping tabs on the state’s politics and is against what is going on. He further expressed his support for the LGBTQ+ community by wearing a rainbow flag on his helmet during the race.
Hamilton’s comments come after the FIA initially stated that it would prohibit drivers from making political statements. However, the governing body later loosened its stance, allowing drivers to express their views.
The Miami Grand Prix festivities will kick off on Friday with practice sessions. Hamilton’s solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community has been welcomed by many and is a testament to his commitment to equality.
