Doja Cat, also known as Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, recently took to Instagram to show off her new tattoo. The “Say So” singer shared pictures of her new bat skeleton tattoo that covers her entire back. Along with the pictures, Doja included a passage that highlights the meaning behind the tattoo. The passage explains that bats can represent death as a way of letting go of the old and bringing in the new. Additionally, they are symbols of transition, initiation, and the start of a new beginning.
Doja’s Previous Tattoo
Doja’s last tattoo, which depicted a mythological figure, drew criticism from some followers who accused her of “selling her soul” and called the design “demonic.” However, Doja explained on Instagram that she discovered the artwork in the 1665 edition of Fortunio Liceti’s “De Monstris.” Liceti’s work addressed “deformities in nature” such as “pygmies, supposed mermaids, deformed fetuses, and other natural marvels.” He also likened nature to an artist who ingeniously creates another form more admirable when faced with some imperfection in the materials to be shaped.
Doja credited Mr. K, a popular artist at Bang Bang in New York City, with her new bat tattoo. Mr. K has also tattooed celebrities such as Justin and Hailey Bieber, Joe Jonas, Sophie Turner, Matt Damon, and Rita Ora. He shared a few photos from Doja’s tattoo session on his own Instagram, praising her and the “lovely piece.”
Doja’s new tattoo and the meaning behind it are a way for her to express herself and mark a new beginning. Her choice of a bat skeleton may be seen as unconventional, but it speaks to her individuality and creativity. As an artist and performer, Doja continues to push boundaries and inspire her fans.
