Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” Remake Draws Comparisons to Megxit and Kate Middleton

Disney’s upcoming remake of “The Little Mermaid” seems to reference the ongoing Megxit controversy, according to a reviewer who saw an early screening of the film. The critic claims that the movie makes subtle comparisons between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the two lead characters, Ariel and Prince Eric. The film also contains a scene where Prince Eric tries to guess Ariel’s name and suggests “Diana” and “Catherine,” with Ariel’s disgusted reaction suggesting that the name choices were not coincidental. Catherine is the full name of Prince Harry’s sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, who is seen as Markle’s real-life nemesis.

Meghan Markle Identifies with Ariel

During a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle stated that she identified with Ariel from the original 1989 animation. She said that she watched the movie during her troubled time in the UK after her wedding to Prince Harry and related to the character’s loss of voice due to falling in love with the prince.

Cast and Release Date

“The Little Mermaid” remake stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Johan Hauer-King as Prince Eric, and Melissa McCarthy as villain Ursula. The movie is set to release on May 26.
